L'Oréal USA announces 2017 Women In Science fellows

L'Oréal USA has announced its 2017 Women in Science fellows. Each of the five fellows will receive $60,000 in funding to pursue their postdoctoral research in science.

L'Oréal's Women in Science program is in its 14th year. It has awarded grants to 70 women who are at critical points in their careers. Over $3.5 million in grants have been provided to women scientists.

Frédéric Rozé, President and CEO of L'Oréal USA said, "L'Oréal has a legacy of innovation that would not have been possible without the women who make up the majority of our scientific workforce." Rozé went on to say the company is proud to empower women through this program to continue their scientific research and careers.

The winning fellows are selected based on their research potential, scientific and intellectual merit, and their commitment to helping girls and women in science. L'Oréal partners with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) who manages the process and administers the grants.

This year's winners include women scientists studying Immunobiology at Yale University, Biology at the University of Nevada, Reno, Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Physics at the University of California, Berkeley, and Genetics and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard Medical School.

L'Oréal announced its winners on Ada Lovelace Day, named after the pioneering mathematician, widely considered to be the first computer programmer. The day is meant to celebrate programs to help women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM.

L'Oréal USA will host an awards ceremony at the French Embassy in Washington, DC in November. Fellows will then visit L'Oréal's New York and New Jersey facilities and mentor students in New Jersey. They will attend an informal science fair in DC and work with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering & Medicine (NAS) to discuss policy and careers for women in science.

L'Oréal USA generates $6 billion in sales annually through its brands which include Carol's Daughter, Essie, Kiehl's, Maybelline New York, NYX Professional Makeup, Pureology, Ralph Lauren Fragrances, Redken, SkinCeuticals and Urban Decay.

L'Oréal USA has a focus on sustainability and has become a mainstay on the National Association for Female Executives (NAFE) top 10 list for Best Companies for Executive Women.
