It was probably one of the most touching moments of this season’s Berlin Fashion Week. The audience clapped as Helmut Schlotterer, the founder and chairman of Marc Cain, thanked longstanding creative director Karin Veit with an oversized flower bouquet ahead of her departure.

Veit has been at the helm of the womenswear label for 43 years, building the brand together with Schlotterer and driving a success that has allowed the Berlin showcase to stand on its own for many seasons.

Veit’s last show took the audience on a journey of Moroccan flavours and colours. Once again, the front row was filled with scores of German celebrities, who attended the event to preview the Spring/Summer 2019 collection. Veronica Ferres and Marie Bäumer were in attendance, as well as Frauke Ludowig, The Boss Hoss and influencer Caro Daur.

An era comes to an end. Who will follow Karin Veit? Helmut Schlotterer refused to make any comments after the show. The new creative director will be announced at the beginning of October, but it has been already revealed that the position will now involve extra responsibilities. Veit will remain in the company until the end of July.

Schlotterer recruited Karin Veit just two years after Marc Cain was founded in 1973. Right from the start, Veit developed and determined what would become the brand’s DNA, establishing with every collection the signature aesthetic of Marc Cain.

“Her fine sense for fashion and her unstinting dedication enabled her to drive the Coordinates concept and core competence of knitwear further – season after season,” said the company. The brand’s signature leopard print, which is continually reinterpreted, has become a favourite with fans around the world. Her contribution and involvement has resulted in the brand growing every year and becoming increasingly successful on an international scale.

“I discovered my love of fashion early on and knew even then that I wanted to be a designer. At Marc Cain I was able to work with joy and a highly-motivated team. I always found the mutual inspiration and realisation of new ideas very fulfilling. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my team and all the staff for the wonderful time we have had together,” said Karin Veit.

The outgoing creative director began her career as a seamstress before completing a fashion design degree. She joined the German fashion brand in 1975, where she developed collections for a range of lines including Marc Cain Collections, Sports, Essentials and Additions.

“I would like to sincerely thank Karin Veit for her exceptional commitment, her great life-time achievement and the 43 years of collaboration and friendship. Alongside her excellent professional competence, I have always valued the personal exchange with her. We have come a long way together and achieved many goals,” said Helmut Schlotterer, chairman of the Board, founder and owner.
