Nike reshuffles senior leadership

Published
Feb 19, 2020

American sports and footwear giant Nike, Inc. has announced a series of changes in its senior leadership, appointing Heidi O’Neill as president for consumer and marketplace, Andy Campion as COO, and Matthew Friend as CFO.

The new appointments at Nike are effective April 1, 2020 - Instagram: @nikesportswear

Currently president of Nike Direct, in her new role O’Neill will succeed Elliott Hill, who is retiring from the company.

As president for consumer and marketplace, she will lead the company’s global sales and Nike Direct organizations, as well as its four geographic operating regions, which include North America, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Greater China, and Asia Pacific and Latin America (APLA).

A graduate of the University of Colorado Boulder, O’Neill came to Nike in 1998 as director of marketing and has since held a range of different senior leadership roles at the company, including VP and GM of Nike stores, VP and GM of Nike global women’s and training businesses, and VP of U.S. apparel.

Prior to joining Nike, the executive worked as director of marketing at Levi Strauss & Co., having begun her career at advertising agency Foote, Cone & Belding as VP and management supervisor.

Campion, who currently serves as EVP and CFO at Nike, will be succeeding Eric Sprunk in his new role as COO.

He will be tasked with leading the company’s technology and digital transformation, while also overseeing responsibilities such as sourcing and manufacturing, demand and supply management, distribution and logistics, procurement, sustainability, and workplace design and connectivity.

The executive has been at Nike since 2007, when he joined the company as VP of global planning and development. He went on to hold a range of different finance and strategy roles before becoming CFO in 2015.

His previous experience also includes an 11-year period spent at Walt Disney Co., where he held a variety of leadership roles related to strategic planning, mergers and acquisitions, and operations and financial planning, among other responsibilities.

Campion has a BA in Economics from UCLA, an MBA from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management and a JD and LLM in Taxation from the University of San Diego’s School of Law.

Friend will therefore be stepping into Campion’s old role when he assumes the mantle of CFO this spring, promoted from his current position as CFO of Nike’s operating segments and VP of investor relations.

The executive joined Nike as VP for corporate strategy and development in 2009. He then became CFO of emerging markets in 2011, going on to hold other senior financial roles at the company including VP and CFO of the Nike brand, and VP and CFO of global brands and functions.

Before coming to Nike, the graduate of the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, worked at Morgan Stanley from 2000 to 2005 and at Goldman Sachs from 2005 to 2009.

“Heidi and Andy’s leadership has been instrumental in both evolving and driving Nike’s strategy over the last decade. In their new roles, we will see them have even greater impact on Nike’s success in the future,” said Nike president and CEO John Donahoe in a release. “Matthew brings more than 10 years of Nike experience to the CFO role and will be a great addition to our executive leadership team.”

Donahoe himself, the former president and CEO of Ebay, only recently stepped into his current role at Nike, having taken the reins of the company in January 2020, after five years of serving on its board.

O’Neill, Campion and Friend’s appointments are effective April 1. Hill and Sprunk will remain with Nike until later this year in order to ensure a smooth transition.
