Trendstop: Key Catwalk Trends from the Menswear Shows SS 2016

Published
Jul 23, 2015

As menswear design gets increasingly exciting each season, the Spring/Summer 2016 catwalks were full of inspirational new styles to update the contemporary men’s wardrobe. From London and Milan to Paris, key developments included plays on minimal aesthetics and Eastern inspirations, as masculine looks were balanced with a delicate feminine feel. Elsewhere, an evolution of utility themes and denim staples could be seen, while a strong selection of offerings came through from smaller brands like Umit Benan and Hood By Air. This week, the catwalk experts at Trendstop.com reveal some of the most directional trends to hit the S/S16 menswear shows, along with examples of influential designers.

An Eastern Inspiration

Eastern aesthetics abound in new Spring/Summer collections, infusing modern designs with a touch of exotic elegance. Craig Green explored martial arts uniform silhouettes with a striking use of layering and colour, while tunic shapes were combined with sportive textures and details at No Editions. Astrid Andersen introduced a luxe element with cherry blossom print satin.

Feminine Focus

Laces, silks and sheers continue to inspire designers, introducing a femme component to summer menswear. This trend adds softness to formal designs, from gauzy shirts worn with tailored pants at Dries Van Noten to shimmery golden shapes set off by longline scarves at Burberry. Meanwhile, bold floral prints made a statement on colour pop Gucci suiting.

Minimal Luxe

A minimal aesthetic impacted on shows in each fashion capital, complete with a strong emphasis on luxurious textures. Coordinated outfits appeared with clean cuts and subtle details, including relaxed pastel-hued tailoring at Damir Doma and Giorgio Armani. Hood By Air injected a utility twist with customisable spliced silhouettes.

Utilitarian Uniform

Utilitarian influences are a key theme for S/S16, with practical styles manifesting as core staples of numerous collections. Designers showcased multi-pocket jackets, boiler suits and casual co-ords, while design twists added newness in the form of pastel shades or sportive accessories. Umit Benan, Kenzo and Fendi all incorporated this trend in their collections.

Fresh denim inspirations emerged in a major way in all cities, offering contemporary updates for wardrobe staples. Oversized silhouettes made a statement at Juun.J and Giorgio Armani, on show in both formal and casual stylings. At Givenchy, detailed denim shirts were worn alongside kilts with tonal Americana surface designs.
